Treatment Side Effects

Everyone reacts to cancer treatment differently.  Some experience quite unfavorable side effects, and some barely have any at all.

It's important not to assume which side effects you may experience.  Instead, it's best to prepare a list of questions to ask your healthcare professional before you start treatment.  These questions will help you to prepare and potentially reduce your risks of getting them.

Let's review some specific questions to ask your healthcare team about treatment side effects.

Side Effect Management Questions

  1. What possible side effects should I expect?

  2. When might they start?

  3. How can I prepare for them or lessen their impact?

  4. Are there medications that can help relieve the side effects?

  5. Given my current state of health, am I at a high risk of getting side effects from treatment?

  6. Are there any long term side effects from this treatment?

  7. Will my treatment put me at risk for a low white blood cell count or infection?

  8. Will I be able to continue working throughout my treatment?

  9. Will I be able to drive myself to my treatments?

  10. If my side effects from treatment become unmanageable will I continue to receive treatment?

  11. Who should I contact if I have an emergency medical situation?

Understanding Your Side Effects

Coping with side effects from treatment may be the most difficult part of your cancer journey.

The side effects you experience depend on many different factors, such as the type and quantity of treatment(s) you receive, your age, underlying health issues, and your lifestyle.

Since everyone reacts to treatment differently, it's not always possible to predict how severe your side effects will be or if you will have any at all.

It's important to be informed of potential side effects to look out for and how to deal with them if they do occur.
